About this award

You can receive $6,000 per year for 4 years, totaling $24,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving Canadian high-school student who has been short-listed for the Governors' Awards of Distinction. There is no separate application for this award: recipients are chosen from applicants short-listed for York's Governors' Awards of Distinction, which you apply for through the Scholarships and Awards application in MyFile (deadline February 15). If you are selected, you will be notified by email or letter; York's timeline says incoming students hear from May to June. Recipients are selected from a short-list of applicants for the Governors' Awards of Distinction. Selection criteria aren't published — ask York University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Funding is automatically applied to your York Student Account and will be reflected on your August statement. Confirm with York University if there are any other specific disbursement steps you need to take. The award pays $6,000 a year for four years. Renewal conditions aren't listed — confirm with York University what GPA or enrolment status you need to keep it each year.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian high-school applicant who is short-listed for York's Governors' Awards of Distinction. To qualify as a high-school applicant, you must be less than 21 years old by the end of the calendar year in which you are admitted to the university (for example, if you start in the Fall, you must be under 21 by December 31). Additionally, you must have been out of full-time high school studies for less than two years from your graduation date, and you must not have attempted studies at any accredited college or university.
