About this award

You can get up to $7,500 per year for 4 years, up to $30,000 in total. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are graduating from a high school in the Jane and Finch community (Westview Centennial Secondary School, C.W. Jeffreys Collegiate Institute, Emery Collegiate Institute, James Cardinal McGuigan or North Albion Collegiate) and entering first-year undergraduate study at York University. You must apply by April 1. You will be notified by email between May and June if you have been selected as a recipient. The award is based on financial need, and you need an admission average of at least 75%. The money is applied directly to your York Student Account and will be reflected on your August statement. Confirm with York University if there are any other ways the funds are handled. It renews for up to 3 more years if you keep a grade point average of at least 6.0, still show financial need, and keep taking part in mentoring programs in local community schools that encourage younger students. You cannot hold it together with another renewable entrance scholarship, the York University Automatic Entrance Scholarship or the York University Continuing Student Scholarship.

Who qualifies

You must be entering first-year undergraduate study at York University from a high school in the Jane and Finch community: Westview Centennial Secondary School, C.W. Jeffreys Collegiate Institute, Emery Collegiate Institute, James Cardinal McGuigan or North Albion Collegiate. You need an admission average of at least 75%, must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, live in Ontario and show financial need. You must also be a Canadian high-school applicant: under 21 by the end of the calendar year you are admitted (for example, under 21 by December 31 if you start in the Fall), out of full-time high school for less than two years, and with no previous studies at an accredited college or university.

Tips for applying

  • ApplicationAvoid waiting until the last minute to check your portal. Instead, log into MyFile starting December 1 to ensure you have your York student number ready. Submit your materials well before the April 1 deadline.
  • SupportAvoid sending supporting documents through the portal if the instructions specify otherwise. Instead, email all required documents directly to FAAS (the Financial Aid and Awards Services office) at FAAS@yorku.ca.
  • StrategyAvoid assuming you are automatically entered for this specific award. Instead, manually complete the Scholarships and Awards application in MyFile, as this award requires an application unlike some other entrance scholarships.
  • RealismAvoid treating the basic eligibility as a promise of funding. Instead, remember that awards depend on available funding and a review process, so continue looking for other bursaries to secure your budget.
