You get $4,000 per year for 4 years, which is a total of $16,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. It is paid for up to four years if you meet the renewal conditions below. This is for you if you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person entering York directly from secondary school with an admission average of 90 per cent or higher. There is no separate application for this award. Each year York picks a recipient from the students who apply for the Governors' Awards of Distinction, so you need to submit that application; York's incoming-student scholarships page lists a February 15 deadline for it in MyFile. Award decisions are sent by email between May and June. York does not publish how it chooses the recipient from that pool. You can also hold York's Automatic Entrance Scholarship at the same time. Funding is automatically applied to your York Student Account and will be reflected on your August statement. Confirm with York University if there are any other specific disbursement steps you need to take. To renew it each year, you must earn a grade point average of at least 8.00 and complete at least 24 credits in the academic year (the prior Summer and Fall/Winter sessions).
To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person entering York directly from secondary school with a minimum 90 per cent admission average, and you must apply for the Governors' Awards of Distinction. You must be less than 21 years old by the end of the calendar year in which you are admitted (for example, if you start in the Fall, you must be under 21 by December 31 of that year). Additionally, you must have been out of full-time high school studies for less than two years from your graduation date and you must not have previously attempted studies at an accredited college or university.
