What you will need

• ✓ An application for admission to one of the Université de Moncton's three campuses
• ✓ The completed Harrison McCain Scholarship/Bursary application form, including your parents' or guardians' income details, sent to the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Office of the campus you will attend (postmarked by March 1)
• ✓ Your transcript of marks for the first semester of Grade 12
• ✓ Two letters of recommendation: one on official letterhead from your principal, a teacher or a counsellor, and one from an employer, volunteer organization or non-family person who has known you for at least two years
• ✓ A one-page letter on what this award would mean to you
• ✓ A personal essay of up to two pages on your extracurricular activities, leadership, financial need, work experience and career plans

About this award

You can receive $4,000 per year for a total of $16,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a new student entering an undergraduate program at any of the three Université de Moncton campuses, regardless of your area of study, and you have graduated from a high school in Canada. You must apply by March 1. You will hear back from the university by the end of May. Selection criteria include having an 80% average after the first semester of your senior year of high school, demonstrating financial need, showing leadership qualities, and proving a sustained effort to finance your education. The official page lists three Harrison McCain Scholarships, one at each campus (the count it gives for 2024-2025). The money is paid in two equal instalments during the academic year. It is first applied to the fees you owe to Université de Moncton. Ask the university's Scholarships and Financial Assistance Office how any remaining balance is paid. To keep this scholarship, you must remain registered full time with a minimum of 12 credits per term. You also need to maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA — a number that represents your average grade) of 1.00 after your first year, 2.00 after your second year, and 2.30 after your third year.

Who qualifies

You must be a new student entering an undergraduate program at one of the three Université de Moncton campuses and have graduated from a high school in Canada. You must be registered full time. This award is open to you regardless of your area of study. Note that if you are attending a campus as part of a student mobility program (a program where you study abroad or at a partner school), you are not eligible.

Tips for applying

• Financial NeedAvoid simply stating that you need money. Instead, provide concrete examples of your sustained effort to finance your education, such as part-time work or previous savings. List the specific steps you have taken to save for school.
• ReferencesAvoid asking relatives. The form asks for two letters: one on official letterhead from your principal, a teacher or a counsellor, and one from an employer, volunteer organization or non-family person who has known you for at least two years. Ask them to give a specific example of your leadership.
• StrategyAvoid submitting documents in French. Instead, translate all your materials into English because the selection committee is English-speaking.
• RealismAvoid assuming grades alone will win this award. Instead, remember that the official page lists one scholarship per campus and that financial need, leadership and your own effort to pay for your education are also criteria. Use your two-page essay to cover all of them.
