About this award

You can receive one of two scholarships valued at $1,000 each. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a graduating student from École Olds High School who has excelled in math and science while staying active in extra-curricular activities. The high school nomination deadline for submission to Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) is September 30. However, you must submit your form to your school's main office first — contact École Olds High School to confirm their internal deadline date and ask how you will be notified if you win. Selection members at École Olds High School choose the recipients. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or a Protected Person if you have refugee or protected-person status in Canada (visa students are not eligible). You must be an Alberta resident, which means one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian has lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months before you start school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is the last place you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting school; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. Additionally, you must have completed all high school grades at École Olds High School and graduated in the current academic year. You must be involved in extra-curricular activities, show academic achievement especially in mathematics and science, and be enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies.

Tips for applying

  • Academic AchievementAvoid just listing your grades in math and science. Instead, describe a specific project or challenge in these subjects where you showed real growth. Mention a specific accomplishment from your time at École Olds High School.
  • Extra-CurricularsAvoid providing a long list of clubs you joined. Instead, focus on one or two activities where you took a lead role or made a difference. Explain what your involvement actually meant for the group.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the September 30 provincial deadline to act. Instead, treat the École Olds High School main office deadline as your primary target. Submit your paperwork early to ensure the school has time to process your nomination.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award since there are only two scholarships available. Instead, use this as one of several options in your funding plan. Research other awards on Alberta's public university and college websites to increase your chances.
