Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid)
$2,500 for Alberta residents in the final two years of a teacher preparation program — apply between August 1 and October 31.
Published by G Paul · last checked October 23, 2026
You can receive $2,500. There are 16 scholarships of $2,500 each available through this program. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are training to become a language teacher in Alberta schools, including those teaching Indigenous languages. You must apply between August 1 and October 31. No specific notification date is posted publicly — before you start your application, check Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid)'s program page or call their office to confirm when you will hear back this year. Winners are chosen based on academic excellence and their enrollment in a program that allows them to teach languages in Alberta schools after graduation. Language diversity is also taken into consideration. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The scholarship is issued after Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) confirms your full-time enrolment at a post-secondary institution. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Since you may only receive this scholarship once, there are no ongoing requirements to maintain it after the initial award. If you have questions about future eligibility, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether any other related awards are renewable.
To qualify, you must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or a Protected Person if you have refugee or protected-person status in Canada (visa students are not eligible). You must also be an Alberta resident. To meet the residency requirement, one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months before you started post-secondary and lives in Alberta; Alberta is where you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting post-secondary; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. Additionally, you must be currently enrolled full-time in the final two years of a recognized Alberta teacher preparation program offered by an Alberta Faculty of Education and have attended both fall and winter terms in the previous academic year.
