About this award

One scholarship valued at $3,000 is awarded. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a first-year student who has faced the hardship of losing a parent, sibling, or custodial caregiver in the last five years while remaining a leader in your community. You must apply by October 1, 2026. Fill in the application form from the Financial Aid and Awards website, add a statement of up to 250 words on how you have shown exceptional leadership or community service, and email it to FAAOapplications@umanitoba.ca. When you apply, ask the University of Manitoba how and when you will hear back. Selection criteria aren't published — ask University of Manitoba how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Manitoba during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with University of Manitoba whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be in your first year of study at the University of Manitoba, enrolled in University 1 or any faculty, college, or school that has a Direct Entry option. You must be enrolled full-time, which means maintaining a minimum 80% course load (at least 24 credit hours during the fall and winter terms). Additionally, you must have already been offered an entrance scholarship from the University of Manitoba General Entrance Scholarship program. You must have lost a parent, sibling, or custodial caregiver within the last five years and have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills or community service. The award notice on the application form words the grade rule differently (entering students with an 85% admission average, or continuing students with a 3.5 degree grade point average), so ask the Financial Aid and Awards office which terms apply if you are not in first year.

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or international student

Tips for applying

  • Community LeadershipAvoid just listing the titles of the clubs you joined. Instead, describe a specific time your leadership or service made a real difference for someone else. Write about one concrete project you led.
  • SupportAvoid leaving the form half-done. Instead, fill in the section on who you have lost carefully, since the form uses it to confirm you meet that rule. Email the completed form, not a draft.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that an entrance scholarship means you will get this award. Instead, remember that there is only one scholarship valued at $3,000 available. Treat this as a high-competition supplement to your other funding.
