Premier's Healthy Living Scholarship for Youth

What you will need

• ✓ Completed application form, emailed to FAAOapplications@umanitoba.ca by August 1 at 4:30 p.m.
• ✓ Written answers describing your healthy living contributions: what you did, where and with whom, how you were a role model, and the difference it made
• ✓ A statement of up to 250 words on why you should be chosen, what you learned, and how you will keep being a role model for healthy living
• ✓ Contact information for your reference letter writer
• ✓ Your University of Manitoba student number

About this award

You can receive a $1,000 scholarship. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a young Manitoban graduating from Grade 12 this year, starting full-time first-year studies in any faculty at the University of Manitoba with an entering average of at least 75%, and you have made an outstanding healthy living contribution to your school or community. You must email your completed application to the University of Manitoba's Financial Aid and Awards office (FAAOapplications@umanitoba.ca) by August 1 at 4:30 p.m. Incomplete forms are not accepted. Up to 10 of the most outstanding applicants from across Manitoba are chosen. Applications are judged on how much you contributed to healthy living in your school or community, how well your work fits the listed areas (active living, healthy eating, healthy sexuality, mental health promotion, safety and injury prevention, substance abuse and addictions, tobacco reduction), the impact it had, and the quality of your statement. Ask University of Manitoba during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with University of Manitoba whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be registered in Grade 12 and set to graduate this year, and be admitted to and register full-time in the first year of study in any faculty or school at the University of Manitoba. You need a minimum entering average of 75% on the courses used for admission. You must also have made an outstanding healthy living contribution to your school or community during high school in at least one of these areas: active living, healthy eating, healthy sexuality, mental health promotion, safety and injury prevention, substance abuse and addictions, or tobacco reduction.

How to apply

Tips for applying

• Role Model ProofAvoid just saying you are a role model. Instead, describe a specific time you helped other youth adopt a healthier habit. Give a concrete example of the impact you had on others.
• SupportAvoid providing references who only know you socially. Instead, use a coach, teacher, or community leader who has seen you promote healthy living. Ask them to describe your influence on other youth.
• StrategyAvoid focusing only on your own fitness. Instead, show how you encourage others to be healthy. Explain the methods you use to motivate your peers.
• RealismAvoid assuming a strong record alone will win it. Instead, remember that University of Manitoba selects up to 10 winners from the entire province. Focus on making your unique contribution to Manitoba's youth stand out.
