About this award

You can receive a scholarship of $2,500. There are up to 10 of these scholarships available. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving Alberta student pursuing a specialized professional or undergraduate degree that simply isn't available for study within Alberta's borders. You must apply between August 1 and January 15. No specific notification date is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how and when you'll hear back via email, portal, or phone. Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) selects recipients based on your academic achievement, the specific program of study you've chosen, and the date they receive your application. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. You must also be an Alberta resident. To meet the residency rule, one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian lived in Canada for 12 months before you started school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is where you lived for 12 months before starting school; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. You must be continuing full-time studies in the second or subsequent year of a full-time undergraduate or professional program at a school located outside of Alberta. You must have also attended a school outside of Alberta full-time in the previous academic year. Crucially, your program of study must not be offered in Alberta (for example, a Doctorate of Chiropractic is eligible because it is not available in Alberta). Finally, your class standing must be in the top 2 per cent of your program enrolment from your previous year of study. You are not eligible if you are in a graduate program, enrolled part-time, an apprentice, or currently upgrading.

Tips for applying

  • Transcript StrategyAvoid sending photocopies or faxed copies of your records. Instead, request an official transcript with a physical signature or seal from your school. Check with your institution's records office to see if they send digital official versions that Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) accepts.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the January deadline to submit. Since the selection process considers the application receipt date, you should submit your materials as soon as the window opens on August 1.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award. With only 10 scholarships available and a strict top 2% academic requirement, you should treat this as a highly competitive supplement to your other funding.
