About this award

You can receive a scholarship worth up to $20,000 in total. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. The money is payable at $5,000 per year for up to four years. This is for you if you are an academically outstanding student moving from a secondary school in Canada straight into an undergraduate program at the University of Victoria, and you have balanced your grades with community service, school involvement and leadership. You must apply between February 15 and April 30. You apply through the online scholarship application in your UVic Online tools account (Student services, then Awards and financial aid). Successful recipients are notified in writing by UVic's Student Awards and Financial Aid office. Selection is based on your academic excellence, school involvement, community service, and leadership skills. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask University of Victoria how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. UVic applies the money to your tuition and fees for the winter session (September to April). If the scholarship is more than you owe, the balance is paid to you as long as you stay registered in at least 12.0 units; ask the Tuition Office for that refund. To keep this award, you must be in full-time study. You need to have completed a total of 12 or more academic units in any two terms of study between May and April and maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 7.50/9.00 or higher on your best 12 units. The scholarship is automatically renewed for each year of your full-time study until you complete your first degree or reach a maximum of four years, whichever is shorter. If your GPA falls below 7.50/9.00, you can file a written appeal with the Senate Committee on Awards to ask for special consideration.

Who qualifies

You must be an academically outstanding student entering an undergraduate program at the University of Victoria from a secondary school in Canada. You need an offer of admission to UVic, and to be considered for a renewable scholarship like this one you normally need an admission average of at least 90%. If you have already graduated, you must be entering UVic within two years of graduating and not have attended another post-secondary school. To maintain the award, you must complete 12 or more academic units in any two terms between May and April and keep a grade point average of 7.50/9.00 or higher on your best 12 units. If you are in a co-op or work experience term, you will be renewed once you next complete 12 or more academic units in two terms with a 7.50/9.00 GPA. Note that you may forfeit your scholarship if you take neither a co-op, work experience term, nor academic units for more than one term.
