About this award

You can receive $15,000 per year for a total of 4 years, bringing the total value of this scholarship to $60,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving student from Ontario who wants to study Smith Engineering and can show a need for financial support. You must submit your application by December 8, 2026. You will find out if you won the award in late February by checking your SOLUS (Student On-Line University System — the secure portal for your student records) Student Centre. Only 1 award is available. The winner is chosen on superior academic ability, creative and original thinking, proven leadership qualities and financial need. Ask Queen's University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this award for the 3 subsequent years after your first year, you must achieve a GPA (Grade Point Average — a number that summarizes your overall academic achievement) of 3.5 in a full course load each year. Since selected recipients will receive further information about renewal criteria, confirm with Queen's University if there are other requirements to maintain the funding.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person (someone with refugee or protected-person status in Canada). Your permanent family residence must be in Ontario. You must be entering the Smith Engineering program and have a cumulative high school average of 90% or higher to be competitive. You must also demonstrate superior academic ability, creative and original thinking, proven leadership qualities, and financial need. You can attend high school in Canada or internationally, and you can still apply if you are taking a gap year. If you win, you will not be eligible for other merit-based scholarships.

Tips for applying

PracticeAvoid drafting your answers for the first time inside SOLUS. Instead, use the practice application, posted in early October on Queen's Application Forms page. It has the exact questions from the online MAA application, with no extra questions.
StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to apply for admission. Instead, apply via OUAC (the Ontario Universities Application Centre — the central system for applying to Ontario universities) by November 20. This ensures you get your SOLUS login in time to meet the December 8 award deadline.
RealismAvoid ignoring the strict residency and program requirements. Instead, double-check that your family permanently lives in Ontario and that you are applying specifically to Smith Engineering. If you don't match both, your application will not be considered.
