The Dr. Liss Jeffrey Graduate Award is worth $18,000 for one year (12 months) and is not renewable. The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Graduate Student Fellowship is worth $20,000 for one year (12 months). This money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a doctoral student on the Toronto Metropolitan University side of the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture. The Liss Jeffrey award is for students whose research is on new media or the making of new media works. You apply for the Liss Jeffrey award through TMU's AwardSpring portal; the program page does not post the deadline, so check AwardSpring or ask the program office. You do not apply for the Rogers fellowship: consideration is automatic. The Liss Jeffrey award recognizes academic achievement and is decided on your new media research proposal; the Rogers fellowships go to doctoral students with outstanding academic accomplishments in the communications field. Ask the program how many students apply so you can judge your odds. Ask Toronto Metropolitan University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. The Liss Jeffrey award is not renewable, and you cannot receive it twice. Who qualifies

To qualify for the Dr. Liss Jeffrey Graduate Award, you must be a registered doctoral student in the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture on the Toronto Metropolitan University side of the program and be going into your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study. You must be enrolled full-time, have clear academic standing, and a cumulative GPA of 3.67 or higher. Your research must focus on the study of new media and/or the making of new media work. You must also demonstrate financial need and be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. Additionally, you must be a resident of Ontario at the time of application. This means you have always lived in Ontario, or Ontario is the last province where you lived for 12 months in a row without being a full-time student, or you live in Ontario now and have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row. Finally, you must not have previously received a Dr. Liss Jeffrey Graduate Award. The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Graduate Student Fellowships are for TMU-based doctoral students in the Communication & Culture program with outstanding academic accomplishments in the communications field; you are considered automatically.
