About this award

You can receive $20,000 per year for either 12 or 24 months, which means you could get up to a total of $40,000. This is a fellowship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a full-time master's student who has shown superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment in your studies. No deadline is posted publicly — before you start the application, check University of Manitoba's program page or call your department office to confirm when applications open and close this year. You will hear back via an official letter sent to your email. Your department or unit chooses which students to put forward, so ask them how they decide. You must be recommended by your department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS — the office that oversees advanced degrees) to be considered. Ask University of Manitoba during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this funding, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and not receive any grade lower than C+ (including AX courses). You must also remain registered full-time in the program that recommended you and show satisfactory progress. Before you count on this for multiple years, confirm with University of Manitoba whether it's renewable, though total support for one student is capped at 4 years.

Who qualifies

You must be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a master's student. Pre-master's and occasional students cannot apply. You need a minimum admission GPA of 3.0, though your department may require a higher GPA. This is open to all students regardless of citizenship in all fields of graduate study, provided your program is eligible for Tri-Agency funding (grants from the three federal research councils). Your eligibility depends on how long you have been in your program: if you are at 0 months (beginning of program), you are eligible for 24 months of funding; if you have been in for 1 to 12 months, you are eligible for 12 months of funding; if you have been in for 13 or more months, you are not eligible. Additionally, you cannot hold this award if you receive another scholarship of equal or greater monetary value, and you cannot change programs, routes, or departments while receiving the funds.
