About this award

You can receive $25,000 per year for a duration of 12, 24, 36, or 48 months, reaching up to a total of $100,000. This is a fellowship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a PhD student who has shown superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment in your research. No deadline is posted publicly — before you start the application, check University of Manitoba's program page or call your department office to confirm when applications open and close this year. You will hear back via an official letter sent to your email from the FGPS (Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies — the office that oversees graduate degrees). Your department or unit chooses which students to put forward, so ask them how they decide. You must be recommended by your department or unit to the FGPS to be considered. Ask University of Manitoba during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this award, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and not receive any grade lower than a C+. You must also remain registered full-time in your program and continue progressing satisfactorily. Total UMGF support for one student is capped at 4 years.

Who qualifies

You must be admitted to a PhD program at the University of Manitoba and be registered as a full-time student. You need a minimum admission GPA of 3.0, though your department may require a higher GPA. This award is open to students in all fields of graduate study, provided your program is eligible for Tri-Agency funding (funding from the federal agencies that support research). You are eligible regardless of your citizenship. How many months of funding you can get depends on how long you have been in your program: 48 months if you are just starting, 36 months after 1 to 12 months, 24 months after 13 to 24 months, 12 months after 25 to 36 months, and none once you reach 37 months or more. You cannot apply if you are a pre-master's or occasional student, if you have an active admission-related hold on your account, or if you have already held UMGF support for more than 4 years. Additionally, you cannot hold this fellowship if you receive another single award or scholarship with an equal or greater annual value.
