About this award

You can receive $2,200 per year for 4 years, which is a total value of $8,800. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a status or non-status undergraduate student of Indigenous ancestry who lives in Ontario and needs financial help to afford school. You must apply by April 1. You will be notified by email between May and June if you have been selected as a recipient. Selection is based on a variety of criteria, your final grades, and a financial need assessment. Meeting the basic eligibility rules does not mean you will receive an award. The money will be applied directly to your York Student Account and will show up on your August statement. Confirm with York University if any portion is paid to you directly. To keep this award for a maximum of three additional years, you must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 5.00 (C+) and be enrolled in a minimum of 18 credits. Confirm with York University if these requirements change as you progress through your degree.

Who qualifies

You must be a status or non-status undergraduate student of Indigenous ancestry. You must also be a resident of Ontario and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person (someone with refugee or protected-person status in Canada). You must demonstrate financial need to qualify.

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

Tips for applying

  • Financial NeedAvoid providing vague descriptions of your situation. Instead, answer the financial questions in the MyFile application fully, and email any supporting documents York asks for to FAAS@yorku.ca.
  • SupportAvoid submitting documents late. Instead, send all required supporting files to FAAS@yorku.ca (the Financial Aid and Awards Services office) immediately after you submit your form. Create a folder on your computer with all PDFs ready to go.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the April 1 deadline. Instead, complete your application in MyFile (the York University student portal) as early as possible. Applying early ensures you are considered for the most awards possible.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that meeting the basic eligibility rules means you will get the money. Instead, remember that these awards depend on available funding and a review process. Apply for multiple bursaries to increase your chances of getting support.
