About this award

You get $9,500 per year for 4 years, which is a total of $38,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you live in Ontario, are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, and are entering your first year of full-time undergraduate study at York with an admission average of at least 80%. You also need to show financial need, a proven commitment to service and society, and a wish to keep serving as a leader at York. You must apply by April 1. You will be notified by email between May and June if you have been selected as a recipient. York does not publish how many applicants it gets or how many of these scholarships it gives each year. You cannot hold it together with another renewable entrance scholarship or the York University Continuing Student Scholarship. The money is applied directly to your York Student Account and will be reflected on your August statement. To keep it for all four years, you must keep a cumulative GPA of 7.5 or higher, stay full-time (at least 18 credits in the fall/winter session), and take on leadership roles at York, with proof sent each year.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person who lives in Ontario, entering your first year of full-time undergraduate study at York from high school with a minimum 80% admission average. You must show financial need and a proven commitment to service and society, with a desire to continue that service as a leader at York. To qualify, you must be less than 21 years old by the end of the calendar year in which you are admitted to the university (for example, if you start in the Fall, you must be under 21 by December 31 of that year). Also, you must have been out of full-time high school studies for less than two years from your high school graduation date, and you must not have attempted studies at an accredited college or university.

Tips for applying

• StrategyAvoid assuming you need an admission offer first. Instead, apply for the scholarship as soon as you have your York student number, even if you haven't been accepted into a program yet.
• RealismAvoid counting on this as certain money. Instead, remember that meeting the basic eligibility criteria does not mean you will receive an award, as funding is limited and subject to review.
