About this award

You can receive between $20,000 and $30,000 per year, for a total value of $80,000 to $120,000 over the course of your studies. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving student from one of the Atlantic provinces who has shown strong leadership and community involvement while facing financial need. You must submit your application by December 8, 2026. You will find out if you won the award in late February by checking your SOLUS (Student On-Line University System — the secure portal for your student records) Student Centre. Up to 10 awards are available. Winners are chosen on financial need, academic excellence, proven leadership and involvement in school or community activities, and preference goes to students entering first-year Commerce at the Smith School of Business. Ask Queen's University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this award for three subsequent years, you must maintain a satisfactory academic average each year and remain enrolled in full-time study. Since selected recipients will receive further information about renewal criteria, confirm with Queen's University exactly what GPA you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person (someone with refugee or protected-person status in Canada). You must reside in one of the Atlantic Provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, or Prince Edward Island. This award is for students entering the first year of any first-entry undergraduate degree program. While any degree is eligible, a preference will be given to students entering the first year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree program in the Smith School of Business. To be competitive, you should have a cumulative high school average of 90% or higher. You must also demonstrate financial need, academic excellence, proven leadership skills, and involvement in school or community activities. If you win, you will not be eligible for other merit-based scholarships.

Tips for applying

LeadershipAvoid just listing the titles of the clubs you joined. Instead, describe a specific time your leadership led to a measurable result for your school or community. Write about one project where you took charge to solve a problem.
PracticeAvoid drafting your answers for the first time inside SOLUS. Instead, use the practice application, posted in early October on Queen's Application Forms page. It has the exact questions from the online MAA application, with no extra questions.
StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to apply for admission. You must apply to Queen's via OUAC (the Ontario Universities Application Centre — the central system for university applications in Ontario) by November 20 to get your SOLUS login in time for the December 8 deadline.
RealismAvoid assuming that an early offer of admission means you missed out on the scholarship. Keep checking your portal in late February, as major admission awards are processed separately from the initial admission decisions.
